THE NEXT ALTERNATIVE AND SUSTAINABLE SOCIO-ECONOMIC MODEL: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract
Over the years, we have experienced the deterioration that human actions have caused on the planet, leveraged by the incentive of the socio-economic capitalist model. At this point, it’s urgent to rethink the socio-economic model that we live in and adapt or replace it with a new one compatible with the so-long desired balance between human and environment. This study aims to understand if Restorative Design could embody a trend for the alternative and sustainable socio-economic models in the existing literature. To achieve that, a Systematic Literature Review was executed, and the 64 selected papers were analyzed using the content analysis technique. Green Designs, arguing for natural resource use optimization and the use of renewable energy sources, seem to be the prevailing design. However, there’s strong evidence that Restorative Design, aiming to replenish harmony with nature, may be as important. Under this design, debates related to Degrowth and other socio-economic models as alternatives to Capitalism were identified. On the other hand, in Green Design, the debates focused on Circular Economy and Green Economy. Green literature focuses on transition, and sustainability and compatibility with Capitalism, in the Circular Economy. Restorative literature discusses degrowth feasibility and presents alternative approaches. The practical content and the role of the state are good opportunities for future research. This study contributes to future research related to the development of sustainable and alternative socio-economic models. Hopefully, this research may encourage new ways of thinking, inspiring new connections, and new socio-economic models.
