Abstract

Bullying and cyberbullying have become prevalent issues in the daily lives of adolescents. Studies with different methodological designs have already documented this reality. To synthesize evidence and trends from qualitative research on bullying and cyberbullying in adolescence. This is a systematic rapid review of literature. The review was preceded by formulating a research question, and parameters were defined. Four databases were consulted: Web of Science, Scopus, ERIC, and PsycINFO. PRISMA guidelines were followed, and after conducting searches, findings were exported to the Rayyan platform. Data underwent thematic analysis, using an exploratory and descriptive approach that allowed the construction of an interpretative synthesis. The reviewed corpus consisted of 26 articles, and five thematic categories emerged from the analytical process: 1) apprehended conceptions; 2) ways of explaining phenomena; 3) reported or perceived consequences; 4) witnesses of violence; 5) avoidance and challenges in facing. Definitions of bullying or cyberbullying by adolescents were influenced by their experiences with varied and often contradictory views (positivity/negativity). Some studies revealed understandings of intentionality and power imbalance present in bullying situations. Anonymity and the feeling of privacy invasion were mentioned as elements that can increase the possibility of cyberbullying. Verbal, physical, indirect, and virtual aggressions were reported. Cyberbullying can be an extension of traditional bullying. Psychosocial consequences were recorded, and schools, as well as families, were understood by adolescents as unprepared to deal with bullying/cyberbullying. Cultural contexts and "local/capillary" definitions of bullying or cyberbullying were revealed. The data can provide insights for more effective intervention and prevention programs connected to the realities of the phenomena studied protagonists.
