MEDIATION IN HIGHER EDUCATION: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract
International experiences show that promoting a culture of mediation in higher education, a context of great diversity and therefore conducive to conflict, makes it possible to constructively manage conflict situations, introduce innovative forms of dialogue and (re)encounter into the institutional culture, as well as promote and encourage active coexistence and co-responsibility among all. This article presents a qualitative investigation that mapped and summarised the existing literature on mediation in higher education, favouring a systematic literature review. The research question "What are the potentialities of mediation in higher education?" was defined as the guideline for this review. Different databases were used to locate the studies, favouring those published from 2015 onwards, in Portuguese, English and Spanish. In total, 7 studies were selected. The main results obtained from synthesising and analysing the studies show that: in the European context, the integration of mediation is still a scarce reality; in cases where mediation is implemented, the benefits associated with it are related to the development of conflict management and prevention skills, positive communication, commitment and respect, as well as strengthening interpersonal relationships and the institution's mission; and the implementation of mediation in these contexts still depends on certain factors and formal, legal and social conditions for it to be quality and successful. As this is a field of research with little scientific production about it, this systematic literature review is relevant to understanding this phenomenon, encouraging future studies on this subject and justifying the importance and urgency of integrating mediation into higher education, with a view to awakening new and innovative ways of acting and thinking the higher education context.
